If you`ve started to do the beginner workout with ease, it is time to move on and continue to work your body by challenging it with the Intermediate workout. Again this works on all your abs and core muscles.

You`ll recognise some of the exercises but each is made slightly harder to tone your muscles and get you closer to the body you desire.

Intermediate Abs and Core

Overview

  • Begin with a basic warm up - walk, skip or jog on spot and perform some easy stretches to relax and prepare your muscles
  • Do 3 sets of 10-15 reps for each of the 3 exercises in the workout
  • Rest 30-90 seconds between each exercise
  • Aim to do this routine 3x each week. On other days try to introduce some cardio exercises to get a balanced weight loss and toning workout

Chair Crunches

These are similar to the basic crunches that you were doing in the beginner workout. The only difference is that you need a chair to rest your feet on. Performing these chair crunches makes the exercise tougher. As you sit you`ll achieve a more complete crunch contracting your abs more whilst not feeling pressure in your back.

Basic Plank

Lay down on your stomach with your elbows bent directly beneath your shoulders. Your legs should be stretched out behind you. Now move your legs so that only your toes are touching the floor and raise you pelvis off the floor. Your back should be straight, with your bottom slightly raised. Your abs and core are now supporting your whole body. Hold this position, and after 20 seconds you should start to feel the muscle burn.

Full Hip Raises

Again this exercise builds on one from the beginner video, the Mini Hip Raises. This time instead of lifting your hips just 1 to 2 inches from the floor, aim to lift your hips as high as possible. David says this is one of his all-time favourite, must have exercises; great for posture and stretching out your lower back.

Overview

• Start with a gentle warm up - walking, jogging on spot and some light stretches to loosen muscles
• Do 10-15 reps of each of the 3 exercises. If you find this easy you`re ready for the Intermediate workout

Crunches
The correct starting position for a crunch is lying face up on the floor with your knees bent. Rest your hands behind your neck but make sure not to push on it. Then keeping your lower back on the floor curl your shoulders upwards. A crunch is similar to a sit-up but by keeping your lower back against the floor, it focuses the workout on your abdominals.

Regular performance of crunches can help you tone and strengthen the muscles in your abdomen.

Mini Hip Raises
Lie down flat on your back, placing your hands face down on either side of the body. Lift your legs until both the legs are upright, with your knees slightly bent. Now gently thrust your hips up and raise those hips completely off the exercise mat to about 1 or 2 inches. Hold the position for 2 seconds and then lower your hips.

This mini hip raise exercise works the lower abdominal muscles and helps improves posture.

Mini Leg Raises
Lie on the floor in the same way you did for the Mini Hip Raises and raise your legs into a similar position. Then bring your legs back closer body a couple of inches so that you feel the strain on your core muscles.

When doing your leg raises, it is important to keep your lower back flat on the floor. If your back lifts up, you may experience stress on your lower spine. To prevent this from happening, you could your hands under your lower back.

This exercise is great for core stabilisation - strengthening muscles so you have good posture and alignment. Doing this exercise can help you to avoid back pain during day to day activities and other elements of your workout.
