Jumping rope or skipping - whatever you call it, it can be a brilliant exercise to add to your weight loss workout.

Skipping can be an aerobic or anaerobic exercise depending how you use it in your routine. Slow skipping for a long time will be an anaerobic activity. Adding a short burst of jumping rope as fast as you can turns it into an aerobic exercise that increases your heart rate and gets your blood pumping.

You may not have jumped rope since school but it is used by many fitness trainers, celebrities and sports people as part of their routine. You can burn around 10 calories per minute (or more if you`re a bit of an expert!) and have fun at the same time.

Jumping rope works muscles throughout your body:

  • Upper body - your arm and shoulder muscles from turning the rope
  • Core - your abs and lower back muscles to help stabilize you
  • Lower body - your calf muscles for jumping and other leg and bum muscles for power

As well as being a good cardio exercise, it also helps develop better balance and co-ordination and can improve your posture. This will make you look more toned and be confident in your body, as lose weight.

Skipping can also be a lower impact exercise than jogging, meaning you are less likely to get injuries and can keep exercising over a longer period.

Finally, you can do it anywhere - in the house (make some space first!), in the garden, in the park or at the beach. So try some different jump rope moves and have fun with your weight loss exercise!
